Cambodia is one of the last countries in Southeast Asia where you can still do some real dirt riding. You follow sand and mud trails along the mighty Mekong River, cross remote villages, ride between rice fields and even venture into the jungle. The level of difficulty? That depends largely on the weather. A little rain? That's when it gets really fun!

Cambodia shows two faces. In capital Phnom Penh, you'll see the latest luxury cars and modern cafes. Outside? Simple villages, wooden houses on stilts and impressive nature that you sometimes have all to yourself.

The country also carries with it a heavy history. Of course, there is the world-famous temple complex Angkor Wat, but also the confrontational S21 prison and Killing Fields leave a deep impression. With a headset, you walk in silence past silent witnesses of a dark past.

Fortunately, there is also plenty of room for relaxation. In both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, you can enjoy good food, a cold beer, a hearty massage and lively markets.

Visa

You will need a visa for this motorcycle trip. You can arrange this on the spot upon arrival. Please make sure that your passport is still valid for at least 6 months upon your return.

Driving License

For this motorcycle trip, you will need an international driver's license which you will need in your home country
pre-arranges with the ANWB.

Follow car

For our motorcycle tours, from 6 participants upwards, a support car with mechanic goes along. You can put your luggage in the follow car. Because we sometimes take small and or unpaved roads/paths, the follow car may take a different route. Always make sure you have your gear with you for the day.

Pocket Money

Even though much is already factored into the trip price, you will still need some pocket money. This is an indication for you what approximately the general costs will be for food, drinks and gasoline. For most Asian countries you can figure about 15 to 20 euros per day.

Luggage

Since the tour will be by motorcycle, it is not possible to bring much but enough luggage on the motorcycle. Preference is to bring a roll-up adventure waterproof bag and a small backpack. This can be secured to the back of the bike with quick straps ( which we have for you ). Also bring a flashlight and towel for possible use along the way, just to be safe. If a follow car comes along, the luggage can go in the car and you take only a small bag for what you need on the road.

Clothing

Experienced motorcyclists know better than anyone else that wearing proper clothing is important, so even in the tour you are going to ride we stick to it. The requirement is to wear long pants ( motorcycle pants) and a ( motorcycle ) jacket, as well as sturdy motorcycle shoes or possibly high hiking boots and summer gloves. It is best to bring your own helmet.

Be aware that especially in the mountains, weather changes can occur and it may cool down or rain. Always bring 1 fleece sweater and rain gear. Raincoat is also good to use to block the wind when it gets colder.

Heavy travel

For an accurate estimate of the severity of the motorcycle trip, it is best to contact R2D personally.

Mechanic

Many of our motorcycle tours will also include a mechanic on the motorcycle if the group is less than 6 people.

Insurance

For this trip, you are required to have a travel insurance needed with world coverage. Check carefully in advance whether motorcycling is covered. The policy number and emergency number should be taken with you and given to R2D in advance as well. Damage to third parties in an accident is not insured, and is usually settled on the spot. Regardless of who is at fault, the foreigner will usually pay for third-party damages. Fortunately, we are usually talking about very small amounts, unless it is a major accident.

Insurance to damage motorcycle usually cannot be insured. Fortunately, the repair costs are in a fraction of what we are used to and thus talk about small amounts. Any damage caused to the motorcycle, regardless of who is at fault, is yours.

Health

About malaria there are many ambiguities. For proper advice, consult your GP/GGD or travel clinic. They can advise you whether you should take malaria pills ( usually Malarone ) for this trip, they can also assess whether this is possible in combination with any personal
drugs. Diarrhea can easily occur due to heat combined with a different type of food. Often the diarrhea is gone after a few days and can also be suppressed by Imodium, for example. If the diarrhea occurs for longer, local doctors have various remedies to treat it. If you depend on drugs or diseases, you should check with your doctor beforehand. He can assess whether this will not adversely affect the trip to be made. You should also inform R2D about this in advance.

Flexibility

R2D tries everything, as best as possible, to keep the trip on track, however, there may be situations where flexibility is expected from participants. There may be engine trouble or the planned route is temporarily not possible due to works. R2D tries to have you stay in good 2** to 4** star hotels or cottages where possible. However, because we want to discover pure adventure and ride to places rarely visited by tourists it may occasionally happen that the accommodation is not optimal and thus some adjustment is expected.

Day stages

The routes go as much as possible on small roads, mountain passes, valleys, through plantations and villages. Upon arrival, a briefing will inform you in detail about what to look out for during the trip. The roads are not of the same quality as in European countries, but are getting better. Thus, there may be large holes or parts of the road that are washed away. The weather has a great influence on asphalt and dirt roads which means that a road that was passable last year may now be in very bad condition.

Traffic

Driving in Asia is different from participating in traffic in Western European countries. In the briefing you will be informed about this in detail.

Money

You can use debit cards at most of the places we visit; however, you must have your card unlocked in advance for this purpose.

Electricity

For Asian countries, it is best to carry a world plug.

Day 1 Departure

The journey is about to begin!
Today you fly to Cambodia for an adventurous motorcycle journey full of dirt trails, jungle tracks and cultural highlights. Ready for the real thing?

Day 2 arrival Phnom Penh

Arrival in Cambodia
Upon arrival, you will be met by our driver. The first night is in the capital Phnom Penh, where we stay in a comfortable hotel with swimming pool, right in the center and within walking distance of the Mekong River and vibrant nightlife.

Day 3 Phnom Penh - Accommodation

Today is no ordinary day. Today you come face to face with one of the darkest chapters in Cambodia's history.

We begin at the former Tuol Sleng prison, better known as S21 - a name symbolic of fear, torture and despair. What was once a simple school became a place of systematic violence under the Khmer Rouge regime. The pictures on the walls, the empty beds, the stories of survivors ... they draw you in silently. Inevitably, you ask yourself: how could this happen?

Then we go to the Killing Fields, just outside Phnom Penh. Among the greenery and silence, thousands of innocent victims are buried. The audio tour leads you past the mass graves, the tree where children were beaten to death, and the memorial that makes the human horror tangible.

You will become silent. Feel sadness. Anger, perhaps. But above all, realization - that this must not be forgotten. This day will grab you by the throat, and never let go.

Day 4 Phnom Penh - Kampong Cham

Ready to ride? Time to tame Cambodia.
After a hearty breakfast, we get a brief briefing - then it's straight to action. The engines growl, we jump on and within 15 minutes we are already on the ferry taking us away from the chaos of Phnom Penh. From now on, it's pure freedom.

Today is a real warm-up: alternating asphalt and thick off-road tracks. We pop over dusty trails, tear through jungle paths and cruise through small villages where time seems to stand still. This is Cambodia raw and unspoiled, just the way you want to experience it.

We end up on the Mekong River, in the middle of a lively town. Our hotel is right on the waterfront, with eateries and cold drinks within crawling distance. Time to reminisce, recover - and start dreaming about tomorrow's ride.

Day 5 Kampong Cham - Kratie

With the Mekong at our side, we move further into the unknown.
Today we follow the course of the river, where paved sections of asphalt alternate with challenging off-road trails. Red dirt, dusty tracks, and a few hefty bumps make for a nice flow - this is not highway, this is adventure!

Halfway up we climb to the Han Chey temple, rising proudly above the river. From here you look out over the meandering Mekong, a panorama that is difficult to photograph - so grand. Time for a moment's rest, and then onward again.

Along the way, we stop for a simple but nutritious lunch at a local stall. No fancy restaurants here, but food with character - just like the route.

At the end of the day, we arrive in Kratie, a charming town on the Mekong. We slept again overlooking the river, bikes parked out front, ready for the next day full of mud, curves and stories.

Day 6 Kratie - Kompong Thom

After breakfast we get on and soon leave civilization behind us.
We take the ferry across the Mekong - and from there the real work begins. The asphalt roads give way to dusty dirt tracks, narrow jungle trails and farm roads where no tourist ever goes. Today it is much offroad.

The trail is raw and pure. Muddy trails, loose rocks and sharp turns keep you on your toes - and if it has rained, it becomes a real challenge. Slipping, correcting and hanging in the stirrups: this is why you came.

Fortunately, after a long, intense drive, a reward awaits: a comfortable hotel with AC, a roof terrace and a bar. Beer in hand, view of the city, and strong stories of what we all braved today. Onward again tomorrow - but tonight? Enjoy.

Day 7 Kompong Thom - Siem Reap

After a good breakfast, we start the motorcycles and soon leave the asphalt behind us. We take the back roads, where we ride straight through dusty villages, narrow jungle paths and deserted rice fields. The route toward Siem Reap is full of surprises: dry riverbeds, winding dirt roads and off-road tracks that will automatically make your smile widen.

Slowly but surely we approach the mysterious temple area of Angkor, where the ruins emerge from the greenery - a magical run-up to our arrival in Siem Reap.

There, a comfortable hotel with pool awaits to relax the muscles. Or dive into a massage parlor for a vigorous treatment. After such an adventurous day, enjoy Siem Reap's relaxed evening life: fine restaurants, atmospheric bars and the energy of a city rich in history.

Day 8 Siem Reap - Accommodation

Today you have the chance to explore one of Southeast Asia's most impressive heritages: the temple complex of Angkor. With its mighty towers, mysterious faces and ancient walls, it feels like you are stepping into another world.

Angkor Wat itself is the most famous structure, but the entire area has more than 70 temples, palaces and other shrines spread over a whopping 350 square kilometers - built during a boom period of some 600 years. Some temples are beautifully restored; others are half hidden in the jungle, overgrown with tree roots. That contrast is what makes it so special.

Today you can go out on your own or explore with the tour guide. They know exactly which temples you should not miss, and how to avoid the crowds for a magical experience in peace. Be surprised, get lost among ancient stones, and imagine what life must have been like here.

Day 9 Siem Reap - Battambang

We leave Siem Reap behind and dive straight into the interior for what will be perhaps the most scenic off-road stretch of this trip. Narrow trails wind their way through rice paddies, forests and small villages where time seems to stand still. It is pure and adventurous riding, with plenty of variety and beautiful views.

Slowly approaching civilization again, we finally hit the main road that takes us to Battambang - a charming town with a surprisingly French-colonial character.

Our hotel is right in the center, ideal for exploring this atmospheric city on foot. Think old buildings, cozy streets and nice places to eat to end the day.

Day 10 Battambang - Veal Veng

Today a serious dose of adventure awaits. If it has been raining, it is guaranteed to be a tough ride. We head into the rugged Cardamom Mountains - one of the last true wildernesses of Southeast Asia. Hardly discovered by tourists, this area was inaccessible for a long time, partly because it remained a stronghold of the Khmer Rouge.

We begin on wide gravel roads, but soon the landscape changes. The trails become narrower, bumpier and climb more and more into the hills. The agricultural plains slowly give way to dense rainforest. Here you feel pure nature, the real Cambodia.

We spend the night in Veal Veng, a remote village in the middle of the mountains. The guesthouse is simple, but cozy. With a cold "Angkor" in hand and an impromptu BBQ, we end this intense day under the stars.

Day 11 Veal Veng - Koh Kong

Today will be another ride not soon to forget. Especially when a rainstorm turns the red earth into slippery clay - then it's sliding, steering and sometimes stepping off. We take our time for this adventurous stage right through the green, dense forest. The inhabited world seems miles away here.

Along the way, we will have a simple lunch stop in the middle of nature. Then we will search for the mysterious "Chinese road" - a striking concrete-block path that will eventually take us to the coastal town of Koh Kong. If we come across a beautiful spot along the way, we might take a refreshing dip in a river or waterfall.

Koh Kong itself is on the edge of the Gulf of Thailand, close to the border with Thailand. We will sleep in a comfortable hotel with pool, in the heart of the town - perfect for recovering from this extraordinary ride.

Day 12 Koh Kong - Kampot

We start quietly on the main road today, but soon we turn off and dive back into the off road adventure. The inhabited world slowly disappears behind us as we make our way through rugged trails, remote areas and the true countryside of Cambodia.

Today's route is on the long side and, especially in wet weather, can get quite tough - mud, potholes, and sometimes challenging balance. But the final stretch to Kampot is thankfully back on road, so we can relax and roll out after an intense day.

We spend the night in the atmospheric center of Kampot, where cozy bars, massage parlors and laid-back backpackers set the mood. Many foreigners have found their place here to enjoy their retirement - and for good reason

Day 13 Kampot - Phnom Penh

The last day of our motorcycle trip, but certainly not the least! We meander once more along some delightful off road trails - the last kilometers of dusty adventure, right through the Cambodian countryside. Then we slowly ride back into the crowds and take the hectic main road back to Phnom Penh.

Once again we spend the night in the same comfortable hotel as when we arrived. Time to kick off the motorcycle boots, grab a cold beer and look back on this unforgettable trip together on the rooftop terrace by the pool. Cheers to a tour full of adventure, mud, jungle and endless memories!

Day 14 Phnom Penh - Departure

It's on.
The suitcases are packed again, but what you really take with you fits into no baggage: memories full of adventure, unexpected encounters, dusty trails, tropical smells and moments that will stay with you forever.
