Kyrgyzstan is one of the "stan" countries in Central Asia. It lies unconstrained between Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

It is a small beautiful country with hardly a flat piece. Therefore, the journey goes entirely through mountainous landscape with hidden in it the many clear azure lakes.

We begin the trip is Osh. This is not the capital, but it is where the motorcycles are. There is a good connection via Istanbul. We ride along the border with Uzbekistan to beautiful Lake Toktogul and over high passes to even more beautiful Son Kul. We ride dirt trails through the mountains, spend the night in people's homes and climb to the high border with China, stopping along the way in a Silk Road settlement.

In 10 days you will get a wonderful picture of this still pure beautiful country.

Pocket money and money matters

In the city of arrival Osh, you can exchange contact money at several places. It is also increasingly possible to withdraw local money from an ATM.

Overnight

Kyrgyzstan is an empty country and most of its inhabitants live in the few larger cities. On the road, therefore, there are usually only simple guesthouses available. Once in a while we sleep in a homestay, in people's homes. And we also spend a few nights in a traditional Ger-Yurt tent. These are of course fairly simple accommodations but do bring you into direct contact with the local population.

Heaviness of the journey

A combination of factors can make this trip tough. First, there are the unpaved roads combined with the 600cc motorcycle. And secondly, the simple accommodation in different places. But offroad technically, this trip is not very complicated.

Of road and distances

About half of the route we drive on dirt roads. These are usually well-traveled gravel roads but, due to the effects of the rainy season, they can be quite tough. Of course, it also always remains very careful in the sharp turns. The high passes in this area are only open in the summer months, in the other seasons there is too much snow. This also means that during the summer period a lot of snow melts and flows over the roads. This can be a harmless stream but can also cause a major landslide. So keep in mind that in such cases a solution must be sought. This can be a short detour but also riding the motorcycle through the stream anyway. Flexibility is thus an important trait to take sufficiently on this trip.

Visa

A Visa has recently become unnecessary for Kirgystan. You get permission at the airport upon arrival to stay in the country for 60 days.

Climate

Actually, we drive through two different climate zones. In the relative lowlands of Kirgystan, it is dry and hot. During the day it is very hot but after sunset it will cool down very quickly and become quite cold.

During this trip, you will ride Yamaha XT 600cc motorcycles.

There will be a follow car with mechanic.

Clothing

Required are a helmet warm motorcycle jacket with protection gloves a good sturdy motorcycle pants with protection and sturdy high (mountain) shoes. Because of the large temperature differences, it may be useful to wear a motorcycle jacket with removable lining. On colder parts in the mountains, you can also wear extra clothing under your jacket if necessary. Since you will experience very hot, but also cold days, it is best to bring both summer gloves and winter gloves. Furthermore, good sunglasses are useful and a helmet with visor that protects from the dust. If your motorcycle clothing is not waterproof then it is advisable to bring a separate rain suit.

Day 1 Amsterdam - Departure

Departure from Amsterdam.

Day 2 Arrival - Osh

After a transfer in Istanbul, you will arrive at Osh, the country's second city and the capital of the south.

Day 3 Osh - Toktogul

We drive out of the city of Osh and follow the road along the border with Uzbekistan and along Lake Anjiyan. In the town of Jalal Abad we stop for coffee. After Bazar Korgon we turn off and get on a dirt road. This one follows the river. It is a first beautiful route and after about 50 kilometers of dirt road we arrive in the small village of Arslanbob. After a simple lunch in this village we continue on a dirt road this winds upwards overlooking the Alyampasy peak of 3800 meters. At the end of the afternoon we return to the asphalt and it is not far to Toktogul, on the lake of the same name. Here we spend the night in a nice hotel.

Day 4 Toktogul - Kysyl Oy

We continue along the south side of the lake and then climb into the high mountains. It is a beautiful plateau with great views. We descend a little again as we near Kyzyl Oy. This is a small village, with no hotels or guesthouses. We stay here in a so-called homestay but this is already more like a guesthouse.

Day 5 Kysyl Oy - Son Kul

In the morning we still follow the beautiful asphalt road and turn off to the south. Here we follow a beautiful gravel road toward Son Kul Lake. Along the shore of the lake are traditional Ger tents built up. We stay in one of these, with a beautiful view of the lake.

Day 6 Son Kul - Naryn

A beautiful route today with more than half on gravel roads. We climb a beautiful part of the mountains south of the great Issyk Kul. It is a remote section but gives beautiful views. Unpaved Hairpin turns bring us to a crossroads where we take the route south. We then descend again and come to the small village of Naryn. Here we spend the night in a simple Guesthouse.

Day 7 Naryn - Tas Rabat

We are now in the lower parts of the country, a valley on the border with China. We spend the night in old Silk Road camp. But before we get here, we drive up to the border with China. This is a beautiful pass around a lake. We can't cross the border, but the route to it is beautiful.

Day 8 Tash Rabat - Kasarman

We climb back into the mountains. On mostly unpaved gravel roads we drive west. Before we arrive in the mountain village of Kazarman, we first climb a beautiful pass.

Day 9 Kazarman - Osh

There is still a difficult stretch before we get back on the asphalt. First we have to cross the 3,000-meter unpaved Kaldama pass. This one gives you a beautiful view of the mountain range covering the country. On the other side of the pass it is already more densely populated and we encounter a few villages. At Jalal-Abad we get back on the asphalt. It is then not far to Osh.

Day 10 Osh - Amsterdam

A day flight via Istanbul back home.

“Iran is a beautiful destination. First routes pretty much "highway" with little challenge as a motorcyclist. Top hotels! Best I found Persepolis, Jashak salt mountains. Amir the local guide is an excellent companion. Knows how to find nice eating locations and takes over the work of the waiters right away. Actually always arranges everything everywhere. Knows a lot. Perfect English. The mechanic and driver of the follow car: Mohse Mohammed are a top duo. Their English is a little less, especially Mohammed's. But they compensate for this with great humor and great helpfulness. Mohse seems to know his way everywhere, and Mohammed gets everything going. Definitely keep this threesome!”
